The ACI campus is a balance of structure and freedom, and of academic rigor and social activities. ACI is proud of the strong bond which develops between faculty and students while also placing an importance on respect for others, academic integrity, building relationships, and developing leadership and social skills.

For an ACI student, the school day begins when the students arrive on campus in the morning. However, at ACI students do more than just attend classes. During the school week students will attend guidance hours in which small groups of students meet with our guidance counselors and teachers to discuss issues affecting their student life. They may also attend an all-school assembly if the school is hosting a speaker of prominence.  Assemblies are also a means for the school body to celebrate national holidays or discuss school-wide issues. The school day has nine periods per day with a break for lunch at mid-day and classes finish mid-afternoon with the final bell.

But student life at ACI doesn’t end at the final bell. Besides meeting the challenges of our rigorous academic program; students are provided many opportunities to challenge themselves through international examinations and competitions.

Our Mathematics Department offers eight international examinations throughout the school year for students from different grade levels. Those who are successful in the Senior Mathematics Contest have the opportunity to participate in the British Math Olympiad.

The ECIS Math Contest is developed by a commission of educators from around the globe and is given to students in Europe and Asia. All of these examinations are in English and the students are not only tested for their mathematical comprehension, but also for their proficiency in the English language. The results are given to participating students and schools and it provides our students with the opportunity to see how they compare with students and schools throughout the world.

ACI students have the opportunity to participate in Junior Achievement (JA), an international organization in which students learn the principles and theories of economics, the role of small business by creating and operating their own business, and the production and marketing of a product. One of the JA programs ACI has been very strong in is the GLOBE (Global Learning of the Business Enterprise) Program. In this international education program, ACI students are paired with high school students from another nation to form joint-venture import/export companies. ACI students have been participating with two schools from North America, one in Derby, Connecticut and the other in Shelton, Connecticut. This exchange allows students to gain insight into negotiating cultural differences and overcoming language barriers.

Another unique opportunity for ACI students is the Model United Nations (MUN). This is an international student organization in which the participants “model” the real United Nations and serve on different committees and commissions to discuss and resolve issues which occupy the United Nations agenda. The students develop their political interests and become involved in world events while learning the critical skills of problem-solving, debating and intra-communication skills. The MUN club attends three conferences per year, the Turkish International Model United Nations in Istanbul at Usküdar American Academy, the Hague International Model United Nations in the Hague, and the Model United Nations Development Program in Istanbul at Koc high school.

For those students who are interested in sports activities, ACI offers a competitive sports program which conducts its training after school in our modern multi-court Shepard Sports Hall. Both boys and girls compete in basketball, volleyball, football, and badminton matches against other schools in Izmir. During the fall and spring semester, ACI hosts its own sports tournament, The Shepard Cup, in which the top volleyball and basketball teams in Izmir compete against one another at ACI.

This is just a small “snapshot” of the many clubs and activities offered at ACI and the daily life an ACI student encounters. By allowing students to make choices about how they spend their time, ACI provides many opportunities for the students to grow academically, personally, and physically.
